What is Saxenda?

Saxenda is the brand name for liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that predates semaglutide-based medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. It works through a similar appetite-regulating mechanism but requires a daily injection rather than a weekly one, and is generally dosed at a lower relative strength.

In South Africa, Saxenda is registered specifically for weight management, alongside diet and physical activity changes, rather than for diabetes control.

Daily, not weekly
